The problem
5½ hrs
A day, on our phones
From a survey of over a thousand Americans. Most of us think we own our phones. The truth is our phones own us.
“Wandering isn't a flaw. It's a feature.”
The problem
5½ hrs

The science
DMN
Wandering lights up the front and back of the brain, and through neuroplasticity, the more you use it, the stronger and faster it gets.
The solution
24 hrs
Friday to Saturday night, for over ten years. No phone, no computer, no work. That is where the delegation epiphany came from, and where two people became a global company.
Once a day, some of you twice
The only time and place left with no distractions, and where I get my best thinking done. My problem was stepping out and forgetting everything, so I keep a waterproof notepad in there.
Twice a day
Phone away. Music off, podcast off. Twenty quiet minutes is twenty minutes your mind can go somewhere.
However often you manage it
A workout, a run, a game. The body is occupied, which is exactly what frees the rest of you. Turn the audio off.
The most important one
Think about your biggest problem before you sleep. In REM your brain is almost as active as when you're awake, strengthening the synapses you need to solve it.
“Put the phone away and let your mind wander”
